Who's Claire ?

 

In the very beginning there was something different about Claire. Claire’s family constantly moved from city to city, traveling throughout BC, South America and at one point even St. John’s Newfoundland, leaving her struggling to find a sense of self. She was a self described social misfit, and had a hard time relating to her blended, multi-cultural family.

Claire was never at the top of her class academically, but showed a natural gift in the dramatic arts, visual arts, and creative writing. Seeing that there could be some hope for Claire in the right environment, her parents moved her to Squamish BC, where they lived at a local campground until they could find a suitable house for their large family. This proved to be quite counter-productive.

Devastated in having to be uprooted yet again, and to the middle of nowhere at that -it seemed that all hope for any potential and self worth to emerge from Claire’s fractured self image was doomed. However it was the very fact that all hope had seemed to be lost that sparked something in Claire. Slowly, and in a rather un-conventional way she began to come into her own. With the sense of “nothing left to loose” a certain freedom was born and she basically decided she was going to be whoever she wanted to be.

She joined a youth theatre group, began performing at schools around the area and in neighbouring towns. She worked on local publications as a writer and graphic designer and began writing comedic shorts, that later would translate into stand-up material. Her unique style and individuality drew attention from those outside her peer group and gave her the encouragement she needed to continue to pursue the things that she had been good at all along. Where she once faced a fear of being different, being laughed at and cast aside as an outsider, she was now being rewarded for the very same thing!

Sometimes all you need to do is just be yourself. When you really know who you are, and you’re doing what your heart knows it should be doing everyone around you can’t help but see that and be inspired by it.
